The scene

What happened at Café des 2 Moulins

Amélie works as a waitress here, surrounded by the film’s gallery of regulars: the hypochondriac tobacconist, the jealous ex, the failed writer.

Jean-Pierre Jeunet chose the café for its Art Deco bones and its neighborhood feel, then turned up the greens, reds and golds in the grade until it looked like a memory.

On location today

It’s still a working neighborhood café with the same long bar and ceiling, and fans still come for a coffee at the counter. The tobacco counter from the film has since been removed.

Line up the shot

Stand at the end of the bar near the entrance and shoot along it toward the back room.

“Got the bar shot at 10 a.m. with nobody in it. The staff were lovely and pointed out where Amélie stood.”
