Amélie’s small pleasures include skipping stones on the canal, and Jeunet framed her against the curving iron footbridges that make this waterway so photogenic.
The canal was completed in the 1820s to bring fresh water into Paris, and its locks still lift boats through the neighborhood.

The quays are a favorite hangout for Parisians, with cafés, bookshops and picnics along the water. Tour boats still pass through the locks.
