The scene
What happened at Trevi Fountain
In La Dolce Vita, Sylvia wanders into the fountain at dawn and Marcello follows her in, fully dressed. The scene was shot on cold nights in 1959, and the stories of how the cast kept warm are almost as famous as the scene itself.
Six years earlier, Roman Holiday sent Princess Ann past the fountain into a barbershop nearby, where she traded her royal curls for a short cut.
Nicola Salvi’s design was completed in 1762. When Marcello Mastroianni died in 1996, the city switched the fountain off and draped it in black.
Then & Now
On location today
Restored in 2014–2015 with funding from Fendi, the fountain is brighter than it looks on film. Crowds are managed, and throwing a coin over your left shoulder is still the ritual.
