The scene
What happened at Via Margutta 51
Joe carries a drowsy Ann up to his place through this courtyard on her first night of escape, and the building becomes the film’s home base.
Via Margutta has been Rome’s street of artists for centuries. Federico Fellini and Giulietta Masina later lived a few doors along, at number 110.
Then & Now
On location today
The courtyard belongs to a private residential building. When the gate is open you can glimpse the staircase and greenery from the street.
Line up the shot
Stand across the street from the gate, facing it straight on, so the doorway fills the center of the frame.
